Saving Database Images as EBS AWS Snapshots
Technical Guide | Version 1.0 July 2019
Introduction
The Saving Database Images as EBS AWS Snapshots Technical Guide shows you how to create new EBS volumes from a snapshot and deploy them to target machines.
You can use this mechanism to save a NuoDB database, for example (in reality a single directory containing a tree of files) into a snapshot. You can reload the snapshot later onto another node. This mechanism can be used for either node replication or backup.
Environment
This guide references our test environment in AWS, which uses the following two EC2 instances running on Amazon Linux in the AWS Ireland Region:
-
i-06a265c2ceac9aa1a
-
i-06c868312f68b4759
Our channels users are internet users. Our branch users are the bank’s employees and their customers, who are accessing the bank’s system from a branch.
Branch connections are usually made through a secure VPN, but our architecture needs Internet gateways and API gateways – this ensures that our infrastructure is safe from the internet.
Objectives
The following sections will shows you how to create a new EBS volume and attach it to the EC2 instance i-06a265c2ceac9aa1a.
This involves:
-
Taking a snapshot of the volume with the data held on the EC2 instance i-06a265c2ceac9aa1a.
-
Creating a new EBS volume based on that snapshot.
-
Attaching the new EBS volume to the EC2 instance i-06c868312f68b4759.
